The World Economic Forum wants to spread industry 4.0 in Brazil. In partnership with, the federal government's Ministry of Economy and the São Paulo state government, the organization announced this November a pilot project to boost the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Brazilian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The inauguration is scheduled for May 2020, when the state capital will host the World Economic Forum for Latin America.
The diffusion of the Internet of Things (smart devices) in the Brazilian industrial machinery will be the main focus. The goal is for different sectors, such as governments, private initiative, universities and civil society, to collaborate in the formulation of solutions and industrial incentive policies. The international organization will provide financial support, employee training and collaboration with other companies. The project will start with 130 companies and by 2021, the number is expected to jump to 2,000.
The Forum has similar initiatives in countries such as the United States, China, Japan, India, Colombia, United Arab Emirates, Israel, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. All aim to foster the creation of protocols for rapidly developing technologies such as autonomous vehicles, drones, blockchain. Brazil will be the only one to receive a focus on SMEs, which account for 98.5% of companies in the country, and 90% worldwide, according to World Bank data. Precisely for this reason, it is important to ensure that small companies are not forgotten. "If they are left behind, there will be consequences for a country's employment and economic growth," says O Estado de S. Paulo Morat Sönmez, director of the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a network of 27 countries created in 2017. by the World Economic Forum.
Industry 4.0 is the latest stage of the planet's industrialization process and covers the automation and digitization of business activities such as the use of robotics, artificial intelligence and big data in production. Germany, China, the United States, Japan and South Korea lead the world race and make billions of dollars in investments to increase industrial productivity and efficiency. By 2020, nearly $ 1 trillion should be spent, according to Deloitte.
In Brazil, however, the concept is not widespread. A survey by the São Paulo State Federation of Industries (Fiesp) of March 2018 shows that 32% of Brazilian companies do not know what industry 4.0 means. In addition, 23% said they are not prepared to face the challenges posed by digitization. The study concludes that it is possible for the country to reduce its disadvantage in relation to other countries by adopting a national public policy for the sector. Otherwise, there may be an increase in this distance.
Embraer is a nationally successful case using automation on the assembly line, which is now all digitized, without prototypes, and with real time monitoring of the shop floor. As a result, there is a 25% reduction in aircraft production time and thus increased efficiency. Sönmez, however, points out that large companies will have no difficulty: "They have the money and the talent."
"If we don't move fast, we will fall further behind," says the Forum director, pointing out that technologies change overnight. "The government takes a long time to decide, but we no longer have this luxury with the Fourth Industrial Revolution."
